‘BEING CALLED A LEGEND IS SCAM’ - RMD

Renowned Nigerian actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has openly expressed his discomfort with the label "legend" often attached to his name. In a recent conversation on the show Curiosity Made Me Ask, the 63-year-old star explained that while many use the term as a sign of respect, he finds it problematic and somewhat misleading.

According to RMD, being called a legend feels like a subtle way of saying his time in the industry is over or winding down. “I think all those ‘legend’ things are a scam,” he said. “They are trying to relegate me to that neighbourhood of retired people or people who should be nearing retirement.” For him, the word carries an undertone that no longer aligns with his vibrant and ongoing contributions to the film and entertainment space.

While appreciative of the admiration behind the title, RMD clarified that he doesn’t see himself in the same category as those he considers true legends. He mentioned veteran actors like Olu Jacobs and Pete Edochie as the people he personally looks up to, referring to them as "ancestors" in the industry. “Uncle Olu Jacobs, uncle Pete… those are our legends,” he said, adding, “I was still watching Pete Edochie when he was saying ‘Ribena children are healthy children.’”

RMD's remarks underline a larger conversation around age, relevance, and perception in the entertainment industry. He believes that while honoring one’s legacy is important, it's equally crucial not to box creatives into retirement before they’re ready. In his view, labels like “legend” can subtly suggest that an individual is no longer active, innovative, or evolving—which, in his case, couldn’t be further from the truth.

Still going strong after decades in film, television, and media, RMD wants to be seen for his present work rather than only remembered for his past achievements. His message is clear: celebrate the journey, but don’t write off the chapter still being written.
